Very good blog. Glad I don't need to argue with anyone why Clowe is good anymore Todd does of good job of providing that. And (frank) that guy talking poop about Zajac.

You know who I can't stand and of course he works for the Canucks is that John Garret guy he has to be right up there with the biggest dummies in the league who have a voice. When it comes to being a homer he is right there with Bostons announcer.

As long as he keeps it up I won't complain. It's kind of weird the sharks traded him. I don't really remember why other than he wasn't producing.

Todd.

The only real issue with Zajac is his contract. Any team in the NHL would be only to happy to have him as their #3 C or in a pinch, due to injuries or other, as their #2 but not at 5.75 million for 7 more seasons after this year.

I think comparing Santorelli To Zajac is a complete waste of time. Santorelli's NHL career was over until Gillis scraped him out of the bargain bin. He is going to get a raise & may even resign in Vancouver as the opportunity to get solid icetime exists & better the evil you know but at best he'll get about 1.5 million a season on maybe a 2 year deal or the Canucks will send him packing. He currently makes the league minimum of $550,000. 5.25 million less than Zajac.

1. Santorelli has barely played C this year he has played the wing, so that's 2 different position were comparing apples to oranges. He can play C & did prior to coming to the Canucks.

As for the comments of Santorelli significantly out playing Zajac. He does have 5 more points than Zajac playing 2 minutes less per game seeing significantly less quality icetime. Zajac is 3rd overall for average power play time a game in NJ & 2nd for forwards. Santorelli is 10th overall in Vancouver, 6th for forwards. In points it may not seem like much but it just under 25% more points in a substantially reduced roll than that of Zajac's in NJ & in percentages that to me is substantial.

We all love Zajac he just shouldn't be getting the power play time he does in NJ. Granted he's earned it based on his 5 on 5 play & penalty killing contributions but NJ has other forwards that would help the power play score more if Zajac wasn't eating up so many of those quality minutes.

He should be the #3 C in NJ playing against the other teams best line night in night out, be on the 1st penalty killing unit & see 2nd line power play time if he isn't to tired from logging all those hard valuable minutes he needs to log. Ideally he would be doiing it for some where in the range of 3.5 to 4 million per season not 5.75 & certainly not more 8 years.

This is NJ though & they beat to their own drummer. The golden rule is alive & well on this team & has been for decades. Tey are nothing if not loyal to their players & systems. If Scheneider were getting the majority of starts over Brodeur, NJ would have probably at least 5 more wins & if Deboer would play the right personal in the right situations maybe another 3 to 5 on top of that.

As a fan it frustrates me but all will be well. This is the 1st time all season that NJ has been able to ice it's full roster. Hopefully Henrique isn't seriously injured as we lose what has been 1 of our best C's of late. I can only assume that Elias & Brunner will be maning better quality minutes as their conditioning improves & that they will start biting in to Zajac's power play time & TOI.

The reality is he can't generate offense to save his life for some reason or if he is it's just not showing up in goals & assists & really we can talk about advance stats all we want but hockey is really a simple game. The team that scores more goals than the other team wins & Zajac isn't helping score goals. At least tha's what his goals, assists & plus minus show & again in the end that's all that really matters from an offensive perspective. Defensively he's as good as it gets. Rock solid, reliable, & a big body that could punish people if he was so inclined, which as we all know is never. Just not part of his make up.

Again the only issue is the contract. 5.75 is way to much for what he brings to the rink.

I said at the beginning of the year that I thought Clowe was worth the money because of how well his game would mesh with the system. He's been a great addition

I think your point about Zajac is an interesting one. I thought his contract extension was a significant over payment. However, I think Jagr has done a fantastic job of replacing Parise as the type of physical forward that accents Zajac's skill set. if they can find that skilled power forward to pair him with for 7 more years then I may be proven wrong. Zajac looks better now than he has at any point in the last 4 years. Not on the level of a Pavelski or Bergeron, but still playing very, very well

I actually thought Gelinas struggled a little bit. He's having some issues handling guys on the outside speed rush. It seems like the game is still just a tad too fast for him and he sometimes loses position. Nothing to worry about long term as it will take care of itself as he continues to progress. But, right now, not great in my opinion,

On Tuesday night, the stars alined themselves and the Devils gave Cory Schneider 7 goals of support. This game was the first time this season that the Devils had their entire roster healthy.

I think Zajac earns every penny of that contract.

Let's consider what shutdown topline centers are worth in this league. Sure, he's only a .5 ppg type of guy, but put him with the right players, and he wins hockey games, forget his point production.

I examine stats as I'm notorious for my spreadsheets, and one of those stats I pay close attention to is top line minutes, separating players in categories based on how many minutes they play a night.

We were ready to pay Gomez or Gionta that kind of money, and remember Holik? Thank heavens we didn't! Gomez wasn't a great two-way player, Gionta is a winger, and Holik routinely played 2nd and 3rd line players. Zajac is going to be a steady shutdown force for years to come, he's going to win faceoffs, he's going to be a dynamic player you can play with anyone on the wing, and he's going to play several roles. He's the every-center that you win with. And he could go anywhere from 40-65 pts every season, depending on his line-mates. If he got 70+ pts a season, he'd be worth 7+ million.

Let me add that playing against centers like Henrique and Zajac wears on opposing team lines because they're hard working and are involved in the play; they'll also help you win in the playoffs.
